Hot buttered rum is a treat in itself, but it also makes a wonderful after-dinner drink at dessert time. This hot toddy is sweet because it's made with brown sugar and butter, complemented with spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. It's all finished off with a good, dark rum. Paired with the right dessert, hot buttered rum satisfies everyone's sweet tooth.
Smooth, creamy cheesecake with a graham cracker crust paired with hot buttered rum is a match that was meant to be. A classic plain cheesecake or a caramel cheesecake would complement the hot toddy perfectly. Bring the cheesecake to room temperature before serving, but make sure it doesn't stay out of the refrigerator for longer than two hours.
Classic Creme Brulee
Classic vanilla creme brulee is a special dessert that would go nicely with hot buttered rum. The caramelized sugar that covers the top of the dessert and the sweet hot beverage are the perfect answer to a grown up sugar craving. While vanilla creme brulee would work best, a caramel, cinnamon or chocolate variation would also work.
Gingerbread Cookies or Cakes
The flavors of gingerbread and hot buttered rum complement each other. Cookies and cakes are the most common gingerbread desserts, but there are others, too. Trifles, whoopie pies, doughnuts and ice cream can all be made with the flavor of gingerbread. All are good choices.
Soft, Ripe or Nutty Cheeses
Although it's traditional in Europe, a cheese course is something Americans have started to embrace. Choose soft, ripe cheeses like Camembert and brie or hard, nutty cheeses like Swiss or Jarlsberg. Bring the cheese to room temperature before you serve it so all the subtle flavors shine through and complement the hot buttered rum. Don't leave soft cheeses out of the refrigerator for longer than two hours.
