How to Deep Condition Extensions

Hair extensions allow you to add highlights, volume and texture to your natural hair for days, weeks or even months. However, just like your natural hair, human hair extensions will suffer damage from heat styling and improper care. Extend the life of your extensions and improve the overall look of your hair with a deep conditioning treatment that fits your budget and is formulated for your hair type.

Step 1

Wash your extensions with a clarifying shampoo. These shampoos are formulated to strip away any gunk, oil and styling product build-up on your extensions. Work the shampoo through the extension from root to tip and rinse it out with lukewarm water.

Step 2

Apply the deep-conditioning treatment to the extensions, concentrating on the ends. If you're treating loose extensions, work the conditioning treatment into the hair and set it on a towel. If the extensions are attached to your natural hair, work the deep conditioning treatment into extensions and your natural hair.

Step 3

Allow the product to sit for 20 minutes, or according to the package directions. Rinse the conditioning treatment from your extensions with lukewarm water. If you can handle it, stylist and Allure-contributor Kerrie Urban recommends rinsing out the deep conditioning treatment with cool water.

Step 4

Squeeze the excess water from your extensions with a towel. to prevent damage, don't vigorously rub your head or the loose extensions.

Step 5

Apply a leave-in conditioner to your extensions and work through any snarls or tangles with a wide-tooth comb.
