Cute Ways to Wear Overalls

by Jennifer Blair

Overalls may conjure up images of farmhands or toddlers with pigtails, but it's tough to ignore the ease and comfort of wearing a classic denim pair. They can actually be a stylish option in your wardrobe too -- the trick is pairing them with items that give them a more grown up, sophisticated look. That means ditching the simple tees and tank tops and wearing your overalls with pieces that offer a little more style.

Go Girly

Traditional denim overalls usually have a masculine vibe, but you can look cute if you pair them with feminine pieces that help soften your outfit. Wear a blouse with girly details under your overalls – a top with a lace trimmed collar or bow tie neckline is an ideal option. Forget sneakers or boots with your overalls too. Instead, pair slim-fitting overalls with colorful ballet flats or wear chunky pumps with a wide leg style. Accessorize with classic jewelry like a pearl necklace, bangle bracelets or chandelier style earrings.

Layer It

Give your overalls a little more style by layering pieces over them. Dress up your look by slipping on a fitted blazer – you can opt for a classic black option or play with texture by choosing a corduroy, tweed or even a velvet jacket. If you want a more relaxed look, layer a cardigan instead. A sweater that’s embellished with ruffles, beads or sequins can add polish and style. Just be sure to wear with a simple shirt underneath to not overwhelm the outfit, a white or black camisole or tank will work well. Complete the look with a pair of pumps and a small handbag or clutch.

Go Non-Denim

Denim overalls are a classic option, but they aren’t always the most stylish. Instead of traditional blue jean overalls, choose a style made of a more unique material. Corduroy overalls are an ideal option for fall and winter – opt for a pair in a rich color like cranberry or forest green over a cashmere or cotton sweater. Complete the look with flat boots or loafers. For a sophisticated spin on the outfit, try velvet overalls. Pair with a printed silk top or a tailored button-down blouse, booties and an oversized bag.

Belt It

One of the problems with overalls is that they can have a loose, baggy shape that can be unflattering. To wear oversized overalls and still look stylish, add a belt to further define your waist and add an accessory to the look. Choose a style in a bold color like red or teal to pop against the overalls. You can also opt for a patterns like animal prints or polka dots, or reach for a ribbon to tie for a feminine vibe.
