Cute Tops to Wear With Vests

by Jennifer Blair, studioD

When it comes to wardrobe essentials, a vest might not be at the top of your list -- but it can actually be one of the more versatile pieces in your closet. Vests come in a wide range of styles -- think menswear-inspired, denim and leather -- and can be worn with a variety of outfits. When it's time to pull together a flattering outfit, some tops work with a vest a little better than others. For the most stylish look, choose a snug top that fits neatly under your vest even when it's buttoned.

Keep It Simple

For a sexy, summer outfit, a basic tank top works well under a vest. You can opt for a standard white or black tank to keep your look neutral or opt for a bold hue to complement the vest color. A tank with embellishments like beads or sequins along the neckline is a good option if you want to dress up your vest. Button it over the tank and wear it with jeans and wedges for lunch or a day of shopping. The tank and vest combination also pairs nicely with tailored shorts or a long, loose maxi skirt.

Go Polished

If you’re styling a tailored menswear-inspired vest, a fitted blouse is an ideal top to wear under it. Opt for a style with feminine details like ruffles, puffed sleeves or a bow-tie neckline to add an element of softness for contrast. Pair the vest and blouse combination with a pencil skirt and pumps for a polished office-ready look. If you’re headed out with friends, combine the vest and blouse with a swing skirt and ballet flats for some casual style. You can even wear your blouse and vest with skinny jeans and knee high boots for date night.

Get Graphic

Give your vest a quirky, casual look by pairing it with a graphic T-shirt. Instead of buttoning the vest, leave it open so your tee’s design is on full display. Wear a black, gray or other neutral vest over a shirt with your favorite sports team’s logo and a pair of dark-wash jeans for a chic game-day outfit. Rock the vest with a vintage concert tee and a leather or distressed-denim skirt for an edgy evening-out look. You can even wear your vest over a floral patterned waffle-knit tee with long sleeves to stay warm when the weather gets cool.

Make It Modern

For a sexy, modern look, button up your favorite vest over a slim turtleneck top in the fall and winter. The combination is polished enough to wear with a pencil skirt or slim-cut trousers and pumps for a stylish, work-appropriate ensemble. You can also pair your vest and turtleneck as part of a more casual outfit -- wear it with skinny jeans and riding boots for an equestrian vibe or layer it over a denim skirt and motorcycle boots for an edgy twist.
