Chandler, a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, is located next to the Gila River Indian community. This city of around 240,000, according 2011 information from U.S. Census Bureau, is bustling with activity, but still maintains a hometown feel. If you are living in Chandler or planning a trip to the area, you'll find a variety of children's activities for your family.

Enjoy the more than 50 parks in the community, maintained by the Chandler Department of Parks and Recreation (chandleraz.gov). Visit Tumbleweed Park (no website; Hamilton Street, Chandler; 480-782-2727), where your kids can play on the Playtopia playground. This playground is broken up into sections, including Farm Land, City Land and Critter Land, with play equipment throughout. Or, stop by the Chandler Skate Park (no website; 4500 South Basha Road, Chandler; 480-782-2727) to let the skaters in your family try out the concrete bowls, metal rails and decks. You could also go to Desert Breeze Lake Park (no website; 660 North Desert Breeze Boulevard East, Chandler; 480-782-2727) where there's a playground, walking trails, a carousel, train rides and plenty of spots to do some fishing.

Rainy-Day Fun

Have some fun indoors on a rainy or hot day at Makutu's Island (makutusisland.com). This indoor play place features 20,000 square feet of entertainment, including a multi-level playground with tunnels, tubes and slides, storytelling, crafts and games. You can even grab a bite to eat in the Under the Sea cafe. Or, head on over to JumpStreet Indoor Trampoline Park (gotjump.com). You'll find more than 20,000 square feet of wall-to-wall trampolines, with trampoline dodge ball, games and activities. There is also an arcade, foam pit and mechanical bull.

Outdoor Activities

If you're looking for some outdoor activities, visit Rawhide Western Town (rawhide.com). Watch a stunt show with gunfights, daring falls and cowboys, or take a ride on the back of a burro, hop on the Desert Train ride or pan for some gold. You can also go rock climbing and ride a mechanical bull at Rawhide. If the family wants to enjoy the beauty of nature, visit the Environmental Education Center at Veterans Oasis Park (no website; 4050 East Chandler Heights Road, Chandler; 480-782-2890). There are 113 acres to explore with 4 1/2 miles of trails, wildlife viewing areas, fishing locations and a butterfly and hummingbird habitat. Your family can participate in special programs, such as nature walks and classes.
