Allowing a small child, who is too young to understand the dangers of falling or pulling something down on top of his head, unfettered access to the refrigerator is an accident waiting to happen. If your child suddenly decides he wants a juice box, the second your back is turned you could end up with a big mess -- or serious injury. To remove the danger of your little one getting into the fridge, consider implementing one of several easy-to-install locking devices designed to childproof your refrigerator.
Pick up a stick-on child-proof refrigerator locking device at your local department, appliance or hardware store or online. Be sure to select a lock suited to your specific style of fridge, such as an over-under or side-by-side model.
Read the instructions on the lock to determine exactly where you need to position the device on the refrigerator.
Wash the area on the refrigerator where the lock will be attached, with soap and water applied to a paper towel, to remove all traces of grease or food particles. Dry the area with a clean paper towel.
Wipe the cleaned area on the refrigerator with isopropyl alcohol applied to a clean paper towel to ensure there is no soap reside left on the fridge. Wait 60 seconds to allow the alcohol to evaporate completely before applying the lock.
Test fit the lock to the fridge, according to the installation instructions, before removing the backing from the self-adhesive pads. The adhesive pads are very strong, and you will only get one shot at applying the lock, so you need to be certain you completely understand how the lock attaches to the refrigerator before attempting installation.
Peel the paper backing from the self-adhesive pads on the child-proof locking device and place the pads in position on the refrigerator. Press down firmly on the pads with your fingers, rubbing the entire surface of the pads to ensure a uniform bond to the refrigerator surface.
Test the lock. Place the locking strap over the hook and try opening the door to ensure the device will keep your little mischief maker from opening the door.
Remove any chairs and step-stools from the kitchen that your child could use to reach the refrigerator lock.
