Characteristics of a Type B personality include calmness and an even-tempered disposition. Type B individuals are methodical, in addition to being laid-back, relaxed, and patient when others make mistakes. Ideal careers for this personality type include environments in which they can use their analytical abilities, be the voice of reason, and create an atmosphere of tranquility.

Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists

A person with a Type B personality is well suited for a career as a mental health counselor or marriage and family therapist. By patiently listening to their clients and calmly offering rational solutions, these professionals help people to understand and manage or overcome personal or relational problems. The median annual salary for mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists is $39,710, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS). The educational requirement for these positions is a master’s degree in either counseling or marriage and family therapy.

Network and Computer Systems Administrators

Another career field that may be a good fit for a person with a Type B personality is a network and computer systems administrator. This type of job allows the Type B to use his analytical skills to assess an organization’s computer network needs and then formulate an effective plan that ensures the computer systems operate correctly on a day-to-day basis, secure from cyber threats. Most network and computer systems administrators need a bachelor’s degree in information sciences, computer engineering or electrical engineering, according to the BLS, although some employers will accept an associate's degree or professional certification. The median annual salary for this position is $69,160.

College Professors

Individuals with a Type B personality may also find fulfillment in a career as a college professor or post secondary teacher. Their laid-back, patient personalities may be a welcome change to the more aggressive teaching styles of elementary and secondary teachers. These professionals also conduct research, in addition to lecturing and listening to students and helping them to develop critical-thinking skills. The BLS states that the median annual salary for college professors is $62,050. The educational requirement is usually a Ph.D. in the subject area; however, junior and community colleges often hire post-secondary teachers with a master’s degree.

Judges

In perhaps no other profession can Type B personalities make such an impact as the voice of reason than as a judge. Presiding over trials and hearings, judges read or patiently listen to arguments by opposing parties, and objectively analyze the law to render a fair and impartial judgment. The educational requirement for a judge is a law degree, states the BLS, in addition to work experience as a lawyer. The median annual salary for this position is $91,880.
