What Can I Make With Puff Pastry & Pumpkin Pie Filling?

by Aya Pauli

Puff pastry and pumpkin pie filling may not seem like a common duo, but they're a tasty match. Both ingredients are versatile in terms of use and flavor pairing, and the light and flaky puff pastry balances out the rich and creamy pie filling. Whether you’re looking for a gourmet appetizer or a light dessert, there are recipes that bring out the best in both ingredients.

Yummy Pumpkin Pockets

Pumpkin-filled puff pastries work as breakfast or dessert on-the-go. Smear pumpkin pie filling over a pastry square, fold the pastry in half, and bake it to create any type of pastry pocket. Toss raisins and cinnamon into the pie filling and drizzle with maple syrup to make a fall flavored treat. You can also mix the pie filling with whipped cream for a light sweet, or mix it with crumbled bacon and diced apples for a savory snack.

Flavorful Pumpkin Cups

Any cooked ingredient can be thrown into a pastry cup, especially something as flavorful as pumpkin pie filling. Press squares of puff pastry into muffin cups, fill each cup with pumpkin pie filling, and bake to create basic pumpkin cups. Make an extra creamy appetizer by filling each pastry cup with a mixture of cream cheese and pumpkin pie filling. Load pastry cups with a combination of the pie filling and dried cranberries for a tangy flavor. Spoon pumpkin pie filling into each cup and top with a sprinkle of orange zest and minced candied ginger to create an appetizer with bite.

Tasty Pumpkin Croissants

Puff pastry is at the core of every croissant, and stuffing the rolled pastry with pumpkin pie filling makes it even better. Smear the filling over the pastry triangle, roll the pastry into a croissant, and bake it to create a sweet surprise. Add chopped pecans to the filling before stuffing the pastry for a classic taste. Create a gourmet appetizer by spreading pumpkin pie filling, mascarpone cheese and candied lemon rind over the pastry before rolling and baking. Coat the pastry with a mixture of the filling and chocolate chips for an extra sweet touch.

Tantalizing Pumpkin Swirls

Puff pastry and pumpkin swirls take some time to create, but the attractive sweets are well worth the effort. Smear a light layer of the filling over a large pastry sheet, roll the pastry up like a jelly roll, cut the roll into thick slices, and bake the slices to make fancy swirls. Go for an indulgent taste with a mixture of caramel chips and pumpkin pie filling spread over the pastry. Coat the pastry with a mixture of chopped pecans, chopped walnuts, chopped almonds and pumpkin pie filling for a nutty swirl. Spread pumpkin pie filling and butterscotch syrup over the pastry to make a rich treat.
