Activities for Kids in Belize

by Tara Thomas, studioD

Nestled between Mexico and Guatemala, on the Caribbean Sea, lies the Central American country of Belize. This English-speaking country has friendly locals and vast natural beauty. Belize attracts adventurous spirits who flock to its beaches, rainforests and Mayan ruins annually. Kids love Belize's wild side -- and there are numerous activities available to keep them busy.

Adventure Tours

Adventure tours provide an exciting way to experience all Belize has to offer. Wildland Adventures takes families on eight-day excursions, which feature activities like zip-line canopy tours, inner tube cave exploration and snorkeling. Journeys International offers families two Belizean tour options including a nine-day Mayan Secrets ruins tour, and the eight-day Belize Cayo and Caye tour with horseback riding, canoeing and cave exploring. If your family enjoys a variety of options, check out Green Dragon Adventure Travel. With several all-inclusive tour packages from which you can choose, there's something for every member of the family including such activities as a jungle safari tour, swimming with marine life, cave tubing and exploring ancient Mayan ruins.

Unique Lodging

Belize specializes in eco-tourism and as a result has many unique accommodations. The Ak'bol Yoga Retreat and Eco Resort in Ambergris Caye caters to families with children. Here, you can stay in eco-luxe cabanas with woven thatched ceilings. A clubhouse keeps the kids occupied as does yoga classes, a swimming pool and nearby water sports. Children age 9 and younger stay and eat for free at Caves Branch Adventure Company's private reserve located just south of the capital city of Belmopan. Luxury tree houses, outdoor showers and activities like cave tubing, horseback riding, kayaking, and diving await adventurous kids and their families. Situated on 100 acres of private land is the Cottonwood Tree Lodge. Here, kids can engage in activities such as pottery making, wildlife tours, horseback riding and kayaking, while there are also adult-orientated amenities for the parents.

Wildlife Adventures

If your children love animals, take them to the Belize Zoo for a glimpse of the country's wealth of animal species. Exotic indigenous birds, reptiles and mammals both educate and entertain the kids. Even though the name, Community Baboon Sanctuary might lead you to believe that this destination is a sanctuary for baboons, howler monkeys call the sanctuary home. Known to locals as baboons, howler monkey troops roam the grounds and provide families with the opportunity to see them in their natural habitat. The sanctuary connects to the surrounding rainforest, so the chance to see other wildlife is extremely probable.

Water Activities

Kids as young as 5-years-old can go on the Belize Cruise Excursion's X-Stream Kids Cave Tubing Excursion, an educational rainforest tour, dry cave exploration, and cave tubing adventure through the Sibun River Cave Branch. The excursion caters to cruise ship passengers on shore excursions, but all are welcomed. Another option for the kids, departing daily from San Pedro, is Discovery Expeditions Belize, which gives younger children the opportunity to explore the ocean with Snuba Doo, a supplied-air snorkel system specifically designed for kids ages 4 through 7. They can tour the underwater realm of Belize's famed Hol Chan Marine Reserve on this three-hour adventure.
